The Detroit Municipal Retirement Authority (DMRA) is looking for a detail-oriented and analytical Part-Time Government Pension Specialist to support our mission of providing secure retirement benefits to public servants. As a key member of our Benefits Administration team, you will ensure the accuracy of pension calculations, assist retirees with inquiries, and maintain compliance with state and federal regulations. This position offers a flexible schedule and the opportunity to work within a prestigious government institution in the heart of Detroit.
Responsibilities
- Perform accurate and timely calculations of pension benefits, including service credits, monthly payments, and survivor benefits.
- Review and process retirement applications and related documentation to ensure full compliance with DMRA policies and state statutes.
- Respond to inquiries from current and prospective retirees via phone, email, and in-person, providing clear and compassionate explanations of pension provisions.
- Maintain and update accurate records in our pension management system, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.
- Collaborate with the Human Resources and Finance departments to resolve complex discrepancies and provide support during annual enrollment periods.
- Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations for the Board of Trustees and external auditors.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in pension administration, government benefits, or a similar financial support role.
- Strong knowledge of retirement plan regulations, including ERISA and state-specific pension laws.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for data analysis and reporting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex financial concepts to a non-technical audience.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a part-time capacity.
