Responsibilities
- Receive and process incoming emergency (911) and non-emergency calls, gathering critical information to dispatch appropriate law enforcement, fire, and medical units.
- Monitor and operate computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems to track unit status, provide real-time updates, and maintain accurate incident logs.
- Communicate effectively with field personnel, supervisors, and other agencies to coordinate response strategies and share vital intelligence.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all departmental policies, standard operating procedures, and local, state, and federal regulations.
- Perform multi-tasking duties during high-stress situations, prioritizing calls based on urgency and severity to ensure rapid response times.
- Assist in training new dispatch personnel by sharing knowledge of call handling protocols and system operations.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required; additional college coursework in criminal justice or communications is a plus.
- Valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record required.
- Strong typing skills (minimum 35-40 WPM) and proficiency with computer applications and Windows-based software.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to remain calm and articulate under extreme pressure.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation, including a psychological evaluation and drug screening.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, holidays, nights, and weekends as required by the department.
