Job Summary:
The Police Dispatcher Trainee plays a vital role in maintaining public safety by operating multi-line radio communications systems and emergency telephone systems. You will receive and process emergency and non-emergency calls, gather essential information, and dispatch appropriate law enforcement personnel to the scene.
Responsibilities
- Receive and process emergency 911 calls, police, fire, and medical service requests, gathering critical information regarding the nature and location of the incident.
- Monitor and operate multi-channel radio communications systems to maintain contact with law enforcement officers and field units in real-time.
- Dispatch appropriate resources, including patrol units, detectives, and emergency services, based on the severity and type of emergency.
- Enter detailed information into Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and records management databases accurately and efficiently.
- Communicate with other public safety agencies, hospitals, and utility companies to coordinate multi-agency responses.
- Maintain a calm and professional demeanor during high-pressure situations and provide clear, concise instructions to callers and field units.
- Perform periodic radio and telephone system checks and troubleshoot minor technical issues as necessary.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required; Associate’s degree or college coursework in criminal justice or communications is preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record required.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to type at least 35-40 words per minute with high accuracy.
- Strong computer literacy and ability to learn complex dispatch software systems quickly.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to speak clearly and concisely over the phone and radio.
- Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful, high-stakes environments.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays as required by the department.
- Pass a thorough background investigation, drug screen, and medical examination.
