Responsibilities

  • Receive and prioritize incoming 911 emergency calls to assess situation severity and dispatch appropriate emergency services (Police, Fire, or EMS).
  • Monitor radio frequencies and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems to track unit status and coordinate field operations effectively.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with law enforcement, fire department personnel, and medical first responders via radio and telephone.
  • Enter and verify accurate incident data, location details, and status updates into the department's secure database systems.
  • Perform multi-tasking duties, including typing, listening to radio traffic, and maintaining situational awareness during high-stress events.
  • Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to callers in distress.
  • Assist with training new dispatchers and maintaining departmental emergency equipment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required; post-secondary education in emergency services, criminal justice, or communications is preferred.
  • Valid Class D Minnesota Driver’s License required.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to remain calm under extreme pressure.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new computer dispatch software quickly.
  • Must pass a rigorous background check, drug screen, and medical evaluation.
