Responsibilities
- Receive and prioritize emergency calls, dispatching appropriate police, fire, and EMS units
- Operate radio systems, computer-aided dispatch (CAD), and emergency notification platforms
- Maintain accurate logs and documentation of all communications and incident details
- Provide critical information to officers in the field and coordinate multi-agency responses
- Remain calm and professional during crisis situations, including natural disasters and critical incidents
- Utilize mapping systems to determine optimal response routes and resource allocation
- Assist in training new dispatchers and updating departmental protocols
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework in criminal justice preferred
- Ability to multitask in high-pressure environments with extreme attention to detail
- Excellent verbal communication skills and clear diction
- Strong computer literacy and typing proficiency (minimum 40 WPM)
- Valid New Jersey driver's license with clean driving record
- Ability to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays
- Pass extensive background check, drug screening, and psychological evaluation
- Basic understanding of Newark geography and street layout
