The Role:

As a Public Safety Dispatcher, you will serve as the critical link between the public and emergency services. You will manage incoming calls, dispatch law enforcement and fire units, and provide life-saving instructions to callers in distress.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and prioritize incoming emergency and non-emergency calls via telephone, radio, and Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems.
  • Dispatch appropriate fire, police, and emergency medical service units to incident locations in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provide emergency medical instructions (CPR, choking relief) to callers until help arrives.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date incident logs, radio logs, and status reports.
  • Monitor multiple communication channels and alert supervisors to critical issues.
  • Perform data entry and verification to ensure compliance with public safety protocols.
  • Assist in training new dispatch personnel on communication equipment and procedures.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to type at least 35 words per minute accurately.
  • Proficient in using computer systems and MS Office Suite.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background investigation, drug screen, and medical evaluation.
  • Previous experience in emergency services, customer service, or dispatch is preferred.
