Responsibilities
- Administer defined benefit pension plans for city employees including eligibility calculations, benefit payments, and retirement counseling
- Ensure strict compliance with ERISA, IRS regulations, and Virginia state pension statutes
- Manage participant enrollment, recordkeeping, and communications through our digital benefits portal
- Conduct annual valuations and financial reporting for the $500M+ pension fund
- Collaborate with investment advisors to monitor fund performance and risk management
- Develop and deliver retirement planning workshops for employees nearing retirement
- Respond to complex participant inquiries regarding pension options and survivor benefits
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, or related field required
- 3+ years of pension plan administration experience in public sector or regulated environment
- SPHR, SHRM-SCP, or CEBS certification strongly preferred
- Expert knowledge of ERISA, IRS 401(a)/403(b) regulations, and Virginia pension statutes
- Advanced proficiency in pension administration software (e.g., Millennium, Empower)
- Exceptional analytical skills with attention to financial detail
- Strong communication abilities for explaining complex retirement concepts
- Experience with pension fund valuation and actuarial reporting
