Responsibilities
- Receive and Process Calls: Answer incoming emergency and non-emergency calls using the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and assess the nature and location of the incident.
- Dispatch Units: Coordinate the deployment of police, fire, and medical units to the scene efficiently and accurately.
- Monitor Systems: Continuously monitor radio frequencies, CCTV cameras, and automated alert systems to identify potential threats and assist responding units.
- Data Entry: Maintain accurate and up-to-date logs of all dispatch activities, incidents, and resource allocations.
- Caller Assistance: Provide life-saving instructions and support to callers until help arrives on scene.
- Unit Status: Track the status and location of all active units and reassign resources as needed during high-volume periods.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required; completion of post-secondary education in criminal justice or public safety is a plus.
- Driver's License: A valid Michigan driver's license (Class C) and proof of insurability are mandatory.
- Background Check: Must successfully pass a thorough criminal background investigation, drug screening, and medical evaluation.
- Communication: Superior verbal and written communication skills with the ability to speak clearly over radio and telephone systems.
- Stress Management: Ability to remain calm, composed, and focused under extreme pressure in high-stress situations.
- Computer Literacy: Basic proficiency with computer systems and the ability to learn complex dispatch software quickly.
- Availability: Must be available to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
