Responsibilities
- Administer and process pension calculations, including retirement benefits, survivor benefits, and disability payments, ensuring accuracy and adherence to VRS guidelines.
- Analyze complex member account data to resolve discrepancies and provide clear, actionable explanations regarding pension projections and eligibility.
- Ensure full compliance with the Virginia Code, ERISA regulations, and internal VRS policies regarding pension administration and fund management.
- Conduct regular audits of pension records and administrative processes to identify areas for process improvement and risk mitigation.
- Collaborate with the State Personnel Act (SPA) office and other state agencies to coordinate benefits transitions and terminations.
- Respond to high-level inquiries from elected officials, agency heads, and members regarding pension fund performance and policy interpretation.
- Prepare and present detailed reports on pension fund status, demographic trends, and administrative metrics to the Board of Trustees and executive leadership.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Actuarial Science, Business Administration, or a related field required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in public sector benefits administration, pension management, or actuarial services.
- Professional certification such as FPA (Fellow, Pension Consultants), CFP (Certified Financial Planner), or CPA is strongly preferred.
- Deep knowledge of Virginia Retirement System statutes, State Personnel Act (SPA) regulations, and ERISA requirements.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP) and experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or government-specific HRIS).
- Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and communicate it effectively to diverse audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to handle sensitive inquiries with diplomacy and professionalism.
