Responsibilities
- Receive and Process Calls: Answer incoming calls from the public, accurately assessing the nature and urgency of emergencies to ensure rapid response.
- Dispatch Operations: Utilize Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems to coordinate the deployment of police, fire, and emergency medical services units to active incidents.
- Radio Communication: Monitor multiple radio frequencies to maintain situational awareness, relay information between field units, and provide updates to command staff.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed logs of all calls, incidents, and dispatch activities in accordance with departmental regulations.
- Customer Service: Provide clear, calm, and professional assistance to citizens in distress, ensuring they feel heard and supported during high-stress situations.
- Unit Management: Track the status and location of patrol units, ensuring optimal coverage of precinct zones to deter crime and respond to emergencies efficiently.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree in criminal justice or communications is a plus.
- Licensure: Valid New York State Driver’s License required.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to type accurately and quickly.
- Stress Tolerance: Ability to remain calm, focused, and decisive under extreme pressure and in emergency situations.
- Technical Proficiency: Basic computer literacy and the ability to learn complex dispatch software systems quickly.
- Background: No felony convictions; must pass a thorough background investigation and medical examination.
