The Role:
The Public Works Laborer performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks to support the operation and maintenance of city streets, drainage systems, and public grounds. You will work outdoors in all weather conditions and collaborate with a diverse team of professionals.
Responsibilities
- Maintenance Operations: Perform routine maintenance and repair on city streets, sidewalks, and drainage systems, including pothole patching and crack sealing.
- Equipment Operation: Safely operate and maintain light to heavy-duty equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, graders, and snowplows.
- Snow and Ice Control: Respond to weather events by plowing snow, applying ice control materials, and clearing streets to ensure public safety.
- Site Assistance: Assist engineers and inspectors during construction projects by setting up traffic control, marking areas, and performing basic manual labor.
- Inventory Management: Monitor and restock supplies, including sand, salt, and maintenance tools, ensuring the department is always prepared.
- Sanitation Support: Participate in litter pickup, graffiti removal, and the maintenance of public parks and facilities.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in public works, construction, or general labor preferred.
- License: Valid Class A or B Commercial Driverβs License (CDL) is highly preferred; Class C with air brake endorsement may be considered.
- Physical Demands: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs repeatedly, stand for extended periods, and work in extreme weather conditions.
- Skills: Basic mechanical knowledge and the ability to operate hand and power tools.
- Availability: Must be available for overtime, weekends, and emergency response during inclement weather.
