What You Will Do:
As a Public Works Laborer, you will perform a variety of manual labor tasks essential to the maintenance and operation of city facilities and infrastructure. Your duties will vary based on seasonal needs and project requirements.
Responsibilities
- Maintain Streets and Roads: Assist in pothole repair, pavement marking, traffic control, and general street maintenance to ensure safe travel for residents.
- Operate Heavy Equipment: Safely operate and maintain heavy machinery such as jackhammers, rollers, sweepers, and backhoes under supervision.
- Public Grounds Maintenance: Perform landscaping duties, including mowing, trimming, tree care, and irrigation system maintenance in parks and public areas.
- Construction Support: Assist skilled tradespeople with construction projects, including pouring concrete, setting forms, and hauling materials.
- Sign and Marking Installation: Install, repair, and maintain traffic signs, guardrails, and pavement markings.
- Sanitation and Cleanup: Collect litter, clean catch basins, and remove debris from storm drains to prevent flooding.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to all OSHA safety standards, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and report hazards immediately.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Experience: Previous experience in public works, construction, landscaping, or general labor is preferred.
- Driver’s License: Valid California Class C Driver’s License required. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus but not mandatory for entry-level.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform heavy physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for extended periods, and working in various weather conditions.
- Skills: Basic knowledge of hand and power tools; ability to read basic plans and instructions.
- Soft Skills: Strong work ethic, reliability, and the ability to work as part of a team.
