Responsibilities
- Administer and manage the city's defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans in strict accordance with New Mexico state laws and ERISA regulations.
- Process pension contributions, calculations, and benefit payments accurately and timely for thousands of active and retired employees.
- Conduct regular audits of pension records to ensure data integrity and compliance with internal controls.
- Respond to inquiries from retirees, beneficiaries, and active employees regarding pension eligibility, vesting, and benefit calculations.
- Collaborate with the HR department and payroll division to ensure seamless data integration and accurate payroll deductions.
- Prepare detailed reports for management and the Board of Trustees regarding the financial health of the pension plan.
- Stay updated on legislative changes affecting public sector pensions and adjust internal processes accordingly.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in public sector benefits administration, pension management, or actuarial support.
- Deep knowledge of ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act) and New Mexico Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) guidelines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, v-lookups) and ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and high ethical standards in all financial matters.
