Responsibilities
- Answer and Process Calls: Receive emergency (911) and non-emergency calls, gathering critical information and prioritizing response based on urgency.
- Dispatch Units: Utilize CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch) systems to send police, fire, and medical units to the scene, providing accurate location and status updates.
- Maintain Logs: Accurately document all call details, unit responses, and incident reports in the official department logs and records systems.
- Communicate Effectively: Maintain clear, professional, and calm communication with officers in the field, citizens, and other agencies via radio and telephone.
- Monitor Systems: Continuously monitor surveillance cameras, police radio frequencies, and automated system alerts to identify potential threats or incidents.
- Training: Complete all required trainee curriculum, including radio procedures, geography, and legal updates, under the supervision of senior dispatchers.
- Escalation: Recognize and appropriately escalate situations requiring higher-level command intervention or specialized units.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Associates degree in Criminal Justice or Communications is a plus.
- Experience: Previous experience in customer service, call center, or public safety is highly preferred but not strictly required for the Trainee role.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to speak clearly and concisely under pressure.
- Technical Proficiency: Basic computer literacy and the ability to learn new software systems quickly (CAD experience is a plus).
- Character: A background check and medical evaluation are required. Must be of good moral character.
- Physical: Ability to sit for extended periods and operate multi-line telephone and radio equipment.
- State License: Valid California driver's license and a clean driving record.
