Job Summary:

Under supervision, the Police Dispatcher Trainee will learn to receive and process emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch law enforcement, fire, and medical units, and maintain accurate logs. You will be trained to operate the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and communicate effectively under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and prioritize incoming emergency (911) and non-emergency calls from the public.
  • Dispatch law enforcement officers, fire units, and EMS personnel to incidents based on location and type of call.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and up-to-date logs of all dispatch activities and unit status.
  • Communicate effectively with field personnel, other agencies, and emergency services.
  • Monitor radio frequencies and provide vital information to officers in the field.
  • Assist in the training of new dispatch personnel during the trainee phase.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to speak clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in high-stress, emergency situations.
  • Strong multitasking skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
