Job Summary:
Under supervision, the Police Dispatcher Trainee will learn to receive and process emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch law enforcement, fire, and medical units, and maintain accurate logs. You will be trained to operate the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and communicate effectively under pressure.
Responsibilities
- Receive and prioritize incoming emergency (911) and non-emergency calls from the public.
- Dispatch law enforcement officers, fire units, and EMS personnel to incidents based on location and type of call.
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and up-to-date logs of all dispatch activities and unit status.
- Communicate effectively with field personnel, other agencies, and emergency services.
- Monitor radio frequencies and provide vital information to officers in the field.
- Assist in the training of new dispatch personnel during the trainee phase.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to speak clearly and concisely.
- Ability to remain calm and composed in high-stress, emergency situations.
- Strong multitasking skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
